VDX has tried to help me get used to this ancient and badly written software, but without some tools or additional help I'm lost.
Is there, or can there be a forum that only moderators can see and reply to?
Is there a way to set my preferences so that new posts to a subforum appear at the top of the list, instead of buried 17 pages down in a flat list? I have tried threaded view, etc, but nothing seems to help.
I am told that migration to new software is underway. What software will that be? Will you freeze the database while you migrate tables so no new spam is lost?
I'm sorry if I sound like a whiner, but Phorum just sucks. I saw a recommendation for SMF or IPB somewhere here, and I can speak from experience on those choices with a resounding NO!
Please have a look at phpbb3 if you haven't already chosen. It won't be a pain for members I believe, because the installed base is so huge. Primarily, the administration and moderation tools are easy to use, and tracking new posts and threads isn't a manual task. It can handle a board this size if you have a decent host.
Hell, I might even be able to host this place's user base and traffic on my own network. That is, if there were a way to tell how many people are online at any one time.
Additionally, resolving IP adresses to names is huge waste of bandwidth, since every post view by a moderator results in at least two calls to a whois server.
I'd rather this be a private conversation with admins and moderators, but there you go. Maybe there's a concise and useful guide for mods somewhere? How many mods and admins are there?
Edit: Also, how do I give feedback to the admins who can block fools at the firewall? Do you just delete the posts and hope they'll be good from now on? I've deleted at least 4 threads today from someone "selling" forged documents, but they keep popping up. That sort of gets back to the IP thing, not to mention the possibility of legal exposure for the admin.
