Hello all...........
This is my first time post in this forum so hopefully it will be helpful in my quest. Well to start off I am a fellow reprapper I built my own Reprappro Mendel last summer and it has inceased my love for this interesting topic which is 3d printing. The mendel is great but has its own limitations and as my interest and love grows so does my ambitions......
so to cut a long story short I bought a 10-13 year old Stratasys Genisys xs printer [attachment 16153 4.JPG] for a very very reasonable amount :) . This printer is a FDM based printer but used to special 'wafers' made from PS (polystyrene of a special mixture I think) one can been seen in the photos [attachment 16155 8.JPG], the production of these wafers stopped I think 5 years ago and are now rare to find.I don't have the sofware etc. also the printer tip is missing also.
So my plan (:P). As you know with reprap one of the problems is the structure and stability as with mine the z axis isn't 100% require regular leveling ect... my plan is use the printer for is structure, build area [attachment 16156 10.JPG] and the big ass stepper motors [attachment 16157 2.JPG] and to replace the head/ extruder of the printer with a filament based extruder also to replace the control electronics with something like the Melzi board which control my reprap make it easier to operate. As can be kinda seen in the picture the printer already has it own computer built in it [attachment 16154 6.JPG] so if i do this project I plan on building in a computer to run the likes of ponterface so everything is neat in one unit. The steppers are big (Make : Vexta) the differnt models in the printer are PK296-02aa, PK244-03aa, PK286-03aa and the was a PK264-03aa stepper feeding in filament.
So here is where ye might Join the topic/project is should I do this to the old relic :P (can say probably will) or a cnc router is another option for these strong steppers and strong frame or make a hybrid a cnc and 3d printer combo. I will require advice on what i will need to salvage and what I will need to get? will the likes of the Melzi board do? Also to get a good discussion going in general.................Sorry for the long post but just got carried away trying to explain the project
hope to talk with ye all soon
