Choosing the right firmware and controller (2 replies)

Hello all,
I'm in the planning stage of building a 3D printer that will double as a small milling machinel. I plan to build it as rigid and accurate as possible with the hope that I can have a good printing area and possibly the ability to mill non-ferrous metals. I'll probably need some good torque from my steppers so I'm thinking about using stepper drivers separate from the controller for more current capability. Given my plans for the project, can anyone recommend an appropriate firmware and controller combination? I was thinking that an Arduino Mega would be a good choice for flexibility and then some stepper drivers that match whatever steppers I choose. An all in one solution like Sanguinololu would be very convenient, but I'm worried that the onboard drivers wouldn't provide enough current for the steppers I'll need. I'm using linear rails and ballscrews so the torque needed to move them around might be pretty significant. Is there a firmware choice that could be a good fit for what I plan to do? Thanks.
