I have made the opto endstop described in this page:

I have then tested it on an arduino and it appears to work. the LED lights up when something is made to break the beam.
Once connected to my reprap however, it doesnt work! The light doesn't come on and it doesnt affect the motion of the axis.
Since it works on an arduino, maybe its something to do in the firmware? I have tried commenting out the endstoppullup line corresponding the axis in the firmware but that didnt seem to help.
Any ideas?
