sgraber i3ext extruder, too many holes? (no replies)

I'm tweeking the i3ext extruder so I can machine one, for my repstrap, instead of printing one. I'm just wondering if I need the holes highlighted in the attached picture if I'm going to use a J-Head? This picture also shows the holes not being used. Are they just left over from the original i3 design?
